First2ACTweb is a brand new (and free) online simulation program developed by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council to improve clinical decision making strategies when managing a deteriorating patient.
It simulates clinical scenarios particularly relevant to med/surg nursing but transportable to most clinical environments.
Using an interactive dashboard and series of video vignettes, the nurses ability to recognise, respond, prioritise and perform a clinical assessment will be challenged.
The set of problems presented would suit undergrad or postgrad nurses as well as more experienced clinicians.
Each scenario will give you 8 minutes in real time to manage and prioritise your care (although you can pause the scenario to collect your thoughts).
You will be given an initial video ‘handover’ after which you will meet your patient and manage the unfolding situation.
The module allows you to interact with your patients as well as checking their observation charts and performing various clinical assessments and interventions (such as changing the bed position or selecting an oxygen delivery device).
On completion you are given a scenario score out of 30.
The time estimated to complete the entire program is 1–2 hours, and each scenario is repeatable.
Note: As the program uses Flash in some parts, it is unlikely it will work well on an iPad or any device that does not support Flash Player plugins.
You can register for free to access the scenarios and receive a password via email here.
